Tapioca

Thursday, April 27, 2006 6:32 AM
So we were at our local Asian food market the other day (Chang's Food Market) and came across something that I am assuming must mean "Giant Freakin' Jelly Bean Tapioca." Or something like that anyway. These are huge, about 2/3" across. If the size isn't enough to scare you, the alarmingly bright colors should do the trick! My boys love tapioca, and they love jelly beans. Of course we had to pick up a pack! I admit I'd like to try them. It's just $1.49 for this 250g package. Seems like a steal!

We're going to try them tonight, so we'll see how they turn out. The priest at our church has a weakness for tapioca too, so if they are any good we're going to have to scare everyone by bringing a bowl for coffee hour one of these days!

UPDATE: It's not bad, but it's definitely weird.  It doesn't have the same texture as smaller pearl tapioca at all.  It was more like gummy balls floating in a creamy sauce.  Yeah, that doesn't sound good.  One of our boys liked it a little, the other not at all.  I thought it was fine as long as you only focus on the flavor.

It tasted interesting. Not a whole lot of flavor. The colors were just a gimmick I think. Pretty much chewy balls! They definitely look neat though and could be used for an interesting dish to serve guests. Maybe floating in jello or some beverage. A friend tells me that this is what they use in bubble tea. I've never had or even seen bubble tea so I don't know for sure. I bought it at Chang's Asian Food Market in Coralville, Iowa. They are a pretty new place but they have great selection and prices. 5/15/2006 10:12 AM | Arian
