USB Storage

In response to a post asking about why I went with an external USB storage device, I've decided to respond as a new post. The device I bought lets you take any regular internal hard drive and mount it as a USB drive, then remove it whenever.  The advantage is that you can store gobs of data and have easy access to it from any computer.  Just like a USB key on steroids.  With USB 2.0 you should have speeds close to internal, though as it turns out I have a driver issue limiting my speed right now (ARGH). As for why I...

AJAX and .NET

So Microsoft isn't releasing out-of-the-box AJAX functionality with ASP.NET 2.0. It's a little disappointing, though it sounds like they recognize the importance of the feature and will work to add it in a future release. In the meantime though, I came across an awesome implementation written by a Michael Schwarz. Not only is it full-featured, but he's got a great online demo to put it through its paces. It looks like the API is pretty simple, though I haven't written an app yet. With all of the focus AJAX is getting these days with Google,...

Scraps and pieces

My wife and I have decided to give the boys something to keep them occupied during the summer, and hopefully after that. They love to draw, and even write about things we do as a family. It seemed like a great way to tie all of this together was to try scrapbooking. Honestly this whole new fad has just gotten on my nerves. I'm that way though. When things become popular I just get annoyed. But it seemed like a good idea for them. Maybe even for me. I have thousand of...

Where in the world are the Kulps?

Well we've caught a new bug! Not that new really, but definitely new to us. Little by little I've been reading about fun adventures with GPS units, and the sport called geocaching. I suppose to call it a "sport" is a bit of a stretch; it's a recreational activity. It's a lot of fun though, and I recommend it to anyone who likes to be outdoors, or feels they should be more. The problem with being a computer programmer is being stuck indoors all the time. I realize how sad it is when my knowledge of...

Earth Showdown!

Well we've certainly seen some movement in the mapping space in recent months. MSN announces that their Virtual Earch is nearing completion, Google is updaing their acquired Keyhole package as Google Earth, and in the background NASA release version 1.3.1.1 of their open source WorldWind package on May 26th. How to keep up! It's the coolest thing, and for once you don't need to be an uber-geek to get the most out of it. This is something I can show my wife -- even my mother! -- and get an "ooohhh!" out of her. That's...
