My hard drive

Saturday, May 21, 2005 11:00 PM

Well I got everything up and running with no issues. It's a nice setup overall, though it seems like it may not be running at full speed capability. I thought perhaps my BIOS needed updating to take full advantage of USB 2.0 but Windows sees it as 2.0 so probably that's not the case. It's not that it's slow, but if I run Virtual PC off of it, startup time is slow as to be unuseable. USB 2.0 speeds are supposedly sufficient (as testified by friends) so that makes it seem like a problem on my end. Considering the specs on the hard drive itself (7200 RPM, 8MB cache), unless the external adaper itself is faulty it must be the PC. I'll keep checking. Sigh.

In the meantime, I love all the extra storage!

BTW- your enter the code you see here piece does not always work. I had to load the page 3 times to see the image (that's after I tried to submit a long-winded response which was subsequently lost. Also, it seems to have a brief timeout period. Ditch the security code!

Anyhow, so this device allows you to use what is normally an internal hard disk as an external USB hard disk? What is the advantage of this device compare to just having one cheapo WinTel box with loads of internal disks setup on it? What advantage does this have over simply buying an external USB disk? Do you know if the speeds of this device are faster/slower than a network hard drive? I am looking to purchase some sort of external/networkable mass storage device in the near future for the gigs of photos that are chewing up my PC's disk spac. 6/27/2005 3:58 PM | Joe Strathman

Sorry about the code (CAPTCHA) problems. I'll see if I can fix it.

I've replied to your comment as a new post.
